About Wrestling King of Sports

Preserving the legacy of Amarillo Texas professional wrestling

The History

The Amarillo wrestling territory was one of the most storied regions in professional wrestling history, producing legends who would go on to become world champions.

From 1974 to 1980, the Sports Arena in Amarillo, Texas hosted some of the most exciting professional wrestling matches in the country. Operated by the legendary Funk family, this territory became known for its hard-hitting action and the caliber of talent that passed through its doors.

The Funks – Dory Funk Sr., Dory Funk Jr., and Terry Funk – built Amarillo into a must-stop destination for any wrestler looking to make their name in the business. Future NWA World Heavyweight Champions like Harley Race, Ted DiBiase, and Ric Flair all honed their craft in front of the passionate Amarillo crowds.
